Résumé

Dans Le Compagnon du Tour de France, quelque chose se dit de l'Histoire, histoire des mœurs, histoire de France, histoire de la France post-révolutionnaire. Mais Sand ne suit pas pour dire cela le modèle du roman historique parce que le passé qu'elle évoque est trop récent ; elle ne suit pas non plus le modèle du roman sentimental bien qu'elle en utilise certains ingrédients, parce que ce type de roman place, de manière conventionnelle, une intrigue en dehors du temps. Elle invente donc un romanesque qui se propose, par le biais d'une histoire d'amour, de révéler de manière exemplaire l'histoire des consciences d'une époque, ses tensions, ses contradictions, en profondeur. Le sentimental est alors au service d'un certain "réalisme historique" sans que ces deux notions apparemment contradictoires ne s'excluent.

Catherine Mariette-Clot, Maître de conférences à l'Université Stendhal Grenoble III (Centre de recherche "Études stendhaliennes et romantiques"), travaille sur Stendhal et George Sand. Elle participe à plusieurs projets sandiens : l'édition des œuvres critiques de Sand (U.M.R 5611 L.I.R.E. du CNRS, Université de Lyon 2), l'édition de Simon pour les œuvres complètes chez Champion et s'intéresse à définir la notion de "romanesque" au XIX^e siècle.  

Romantic side and History in Le Compagnon du Tour de France

In Le Compagnon du Tour de France, something is said about History, the history of manners, French history, the history of post-revolutionist France. But Sand does not follow the model of the historical novel to say that because the past which she evokes is too recent; she does not follow either the model of the sentimental novel although she uses certain ingredients of it, because this type of novel locates, in a conventional way, an intrigue apart from time. She thus invents a romantism which proposes, by the means of a love story, to reveal in an exemplary way the history of the consciousnesses of a time, its tensions, its contradictions. The sentimental then serves an "historical realism" without those two apparently contradictory concepts not excluding one another.
